Eyes emoji 12 items
When we got Arie, I was completely clueless about what to actually look for in a breeder. I just wanted a fluffy goldendoodle and I got lucky. After years of talking to other dog parents, seeing the fallout from backyard breeding situations — health ...

Red Flags That Should Make You Walk Away

The things that should make you stop talking to a breeder immediately. Won't let you visit? Always has puppies available? Can't show you health test results? These resources break down exactly what to look for so you're not piecing it together from G...

This was my starting point when I actually started doing real research on breeders. If a breeder meets more than a couple of these criteria, trust your gut and keep looking. The list is specific and practical enough to actually use before you put dow...
Puppy Mills, Dogs in Misery, and Consumer Demand | The Humane Society of the United States

A nonprofit entirely focused on education about puppy mills. Their 'How to Choose a Responsible Breeder' page is one of the most practical things I've read on this topic. They break down the exact questions to ask and what red flag answers look like.

The scale of this is hard to understand until you see the numbers. Helped me understand why research matters even when you think you're buying from a small local breeder. Those can actually be the worst offenders.

The AKC breakdown of warning signs is really practical. The ones that should auto-disqualify a breeder: won't let you visit, always has puppies available, offers to ship without vetting you as the buyer, and can't produce health test documentation fo...

What a Responsible Breeder Actually Does

This is what the good ones actually do — and it's a higher bar than most breeders meet. Health testing both parents, following parent breed protocols, using genetic panels, being registered with the GANA. If a breeder you're considering doesn't do th...

Before buying any dog, look up the parents here by name or registration number. A responsible breeder's dogs should have hip, elbow, eye, and cardiac clearances at minimum. If they can't give you the registered names of both parents, that's a problem...
The Canine Health Information Center | OFA

Cat & Arie | @ariepup profile picture
The actual governing body for goldendoodle breed standards. Their breeder directory only lists breeders who meet specific health testing and ethics requirements. This is the one I wish I'd found before we got Arie.
Goldendoodle Association of North America (GANA)

Responsible breeders use Embark or a comparable panel to test breeding dogs for 250+ genetic diseases. Ask any breeder what health tests they run and ask to see the actual results. If they can't produce documentation or haven't heard of genetic testi...

Goldendoodles are half Golden Retriever, and the GRCA sets the gold standard for what golden parent dogs should be tested for. If the golden side of your pup's genetics wasn't tested to these standards, ask why not. Responsible doodle breeders follow...

Where to Find Health-Tested Breeders

Not all breeder search platforms are created equal. These are the ones worth your time — directories where breeders have had to meet actual standards to be listed, plus the community resources where real doodle owners share firsthand experiences. Sta...

This is the platform I'd start with if I were doing it over. Breeders have to apply and meet health and ethical standards to list. Not a perfect system but a meaningfully higher bar than Craigslist, Google, or most Facebook groups.

Cat & Arie | @ariepup profile picture
The only goldendoodle-specific directory where every breeder has signed an ethics code. The list is shorter than Google, which is exactly the point. Fewer breeders, higher standards.

Real people, real experiences, and this community has done serious digging on breeders over the years. Search your state plus 'breeder recommendations' and the bad actors get flagged fast. More useful than any single article I've read.

If you're looking at purebred parent lines for health testing purposes, AKC Marketplace has stricter standards than most puppy finder sites. Not perfect for doodles specifically, but useful for verifying the credentials of the parent breed breeders i...
