The poster on our fridge changed everything. My six-year-old now walks to it mid-argument and points to the steps instead of shrieking. Sounds fake, I know — but the visual reminder does the heavy lifting.

Half the screaming was because my kids literally didn't have words for what they felt. Angry, sad, and fine were their entire vocabulary. These filled in the gaps fast.

Reading about conflict when nobody's actually fighting turned out to be the secret move. Bedtime stories did more than any mid-meltdown lecture I ever attempted.

Sending a kid to their room felt punitive. Setting up a calm-down spot with actual tools felt different — they started going there voluntarily, which was the whole point.

‘It’s MY turn' was the phrase I heard four hundred times a day. Removing myself as the turn-taking referee and handing that job to a timer changed the entire dynamic in our house.

We started weekly family meetings and I thought my kids would revolt. Instead, they started bringing their own agenda items. Turns out they just wanted to be heard without competing for airtime.

Catching them being kind worked ten times better than punishing them for fighting. When my daughter earned her first sticker for walking away instead of hitting, she looked so proud I almost lost it.

Real talk — I had no idea how to teach this because nobody taught me. These resources coached me on what to say in the moment so I stopped defaulting to ‘JUST STOP FIGHTING.’
