Blue Mountains trails get slippery after rain, and the sandstone steps near Katoomba are basically ice rinks in the wrong shoes. I slid on my backside twice before I finally got serious about footwear.

Katoomba can drop ten degrees in twenty minutes when fog rolls through the valley. I packed a t-shirt once and spent three hours shivering at Echo Point like a fool.

There's no water refill between Scenic World and the Valley of the Waters. I ran out halfway through once and had to cut the walk short, which still annoys me.

The stretch between Katoomba and Leura along the clifftop has zero shade for long sections. I got cooked so badly on Prince Henry Cliff Walk that my nose peeled for two weeks.

Phone signal drops out in the valleys below Katoomba. I spent forty minutes at a trail junction guessing which way was right. Don't be that person.

My first Katoomba bushwalk I carried a school backpack with no hip belt. By the time I climbed back up the Giant Stairway my shoulders felt like they'd been in a boxing match.

The Giant Stairway is 998 steps carved into a cliff face. My quads were so destroyed the next morning I had to walk downstairs backwards at the hotel. These helped me actually function on day two.

The Three Sisters at golden hour is one of those views that your phone camera just can't capture properly. But I also learned not to lug heavy gear down 998 steps.

You come out of the bush starving and covered in red dust. These places don't care what you look like and the food is worth the walk.

Staying in Sydney and day-tripping to the Blue Mountains means two hours on a train each way. I did that once and was too tired to enjoy the walk. Stay in Katoomba and start at dawn instead.
