The boardwalks at Cape Tribulation get slippery fast, and the second you step off-trail your feet are in mud. I ruined a pair of trail runners on day one and spent the rest of the trip with blisters.

Daintree gets over two meters of rain a year. That flimsy poncho from the airport gift shop will not cut it. I watched mine disintegrate during a 20-minute storm.

Nobody warned me about the sandflies at Cape Tribulation beach. I counted 47 bites on one leg after sunset. The mosquitoes in the rainforest canopy are somehow worse.

The UV index near the equator is brutal and the Daintree humidity makes everything feel ten degrees hotter. I got sunburned through my shirt on a cloudy day, which I didn't think was possible.

Cassowaries, Boyd's forest dragons, and blue Ulysses butterflies are all along these trails. My phone died before I spotted the cassowary and I still think about that missed photo three years later.

There are no shops between Daintree Village and Cape Tribulation. I ran out of water halfway through the Dubuji Boardwalk and had to cut the day short, which felt ridiculous.

Cell service disappears once you cross the Daintree River ferry. I relied on Google Maps and spent 20 minutes staring at a loading screen at a trail junction.

Cotton is your enemy in the Daintree. Everything I wore on my first trip stayed damp for two days and started smelling terrible by lunch.

The nearest hospital is over an hour from Cape Tribulation. A scrape from a wait-a-while vine got infected on my second day because I didn't clean it properly. Don't repeat my mistake.

Some of the best parts of Cape Tribulation need advance booking, especially during Australian winter when everyone visits. I missed out on a night walk because it filled up two weeks before I arrived.

Accommodation fills up fast and dining options are extremely limited north of the Daintree River. I showed up without a booking during peak season and ended up sleeping in Cairns, two hours away.
