I almost booked one of those big bus tours until a hostel worker in Copacabana told me those groups barely interact with anyone local. Switching to a small community-led walk changed the entire experience.

My first day I showed up in bright tourist gear and felt completely out of place. A local guide quietly suggested I tone it down. These are the pieces that kept me comfortable without screaming ‘I’m not from here.'

I brought my big DSLR the first day and my guide immediately told me to put it away. Learned fast that discreet gear gets better photos anyway because people actually relax around you.

Nobody warned me there are limited spots to buy water once you're deep in the favela. I nearly passed out from dehydration on my first walk because I packed like it was a casual stroll.

English gets you nowhere in Rocinha. I fumbled through my first interactions until I memorized about twenty phrases. The difference in how people treated me was night and day.

My biggest mistake was not researching safety protocols before arriving. A local guide told me most incidents involve tourists who wander in without context. Fifteen minutes of prep changes everything.

I booked a hotel in Ipanema my first trip and spent forty minutes in traffic getting to Rocinha. Second trip I stayed closer and the difference was ridiculous. Walked to the meeting point in ten minutes.

Walking into Rocinha without context felt disrespectful in hindsight. These gave me enough background to ask real questions and understand what I was seeing beyond the surface level.
