Half the restaurants along the marina look identical from outside, and I wasted two dinners on overpriced mediocre food before I figured out which ones were worth sitting down at.

Some days in Marsa Alam you just need shade, decent coffee, and a view of boats. These are the spots where I parked myself for hours without anyone rushing me out.

I expected the usual tourist junk and almost walked past everything. Turns out a few shops actually sell things worth bringing home, if you know which doors to open.

Marsa Alam diving was the whole reason I came, but not every operator is equal. I booked three different outfits before I found the ones that actually cared about the experience.

Port Ghalib sits in this sweet spot where desert, reef, and ancient sites are all within reach. I booked everything last-minute from the marina and it worked out fine every time.

Picking the right hotel makes or breaks the marina walk experience. Too far away and you'll never bother walking over. Too close to the wrong section and you'll hear club music until 2 AM.

I showed up my first evening in flip flops and a wrinkled beach cover-up and felt wildly underdressed. The marina walk has a surprisingly put-together vibe at night.

Every evening I watched tourists cluster at the same two benches near the entrance. Meanwhile, the best sunset angles were further down the walk where almost nobody bothered going.

Traveling with my friend's family taught me that Port Ghalib is surprisingly great for kids, once you know where to take them so they don't melt down from boredom or heat.

Port Ghalib isn't Ibiza, and honestly that's the appeal. The evenings are mellow, warm, and just lively enough that you don't feel like you're in bed by 9 PM.

Nobody told me half of this stuff before I arrived and I wasted my first two days figuring it out the hard way. Bookmark these so you don't repeat my mistakes.
