The first three book lights I bought reflected off the rearview mirror so badly I almost pulled over. These actually aim the light down at the page without turning the backseat into a spotlight.

Books were sliding under the seats every time I hit the brakes. I needed something that kept her current read within arm's reach without turning the backseat into a library floor.

She kept complaining her neck hurt from looking down at books for hours. A regular neck pillow didn't help because it pushed her head forward. These actually let her angle comfortably toward a book.

Afternoon sun made it impossible to read without squinting, and she refused sunglasses because they ‘looked weird with a book.’ Shades that actually block glare without making the car feel like a cave were harder to find than expected.

Holding a book in your lap while buckled in is awkward. She needed a flat surface at the right height that didn't interfere with the seatbelt or slide off every time we turned.

Regular bookmarks fell out constantly in the car. Every bump in the road meant losing her page. I needed something that actually gripped the page and survived being shoved in a backpack.

Winter road trips meant the heat was blasting up front but barely reaching the backseat. She'd curl up to read and her hands would get so cold she'd stop turning pages.

After reading under a book light for two hours, she'd say her eyes felt ‘scratchy.’ I didn't want screen glasses exactly, but something that softened the LED light enough to keep her comfortable.

Sometimes after an hour of reading she just wants to listen. Having the right headphones and speaker setup means she can switch to an audiobook without blasting it through the whole car.

She kept spilling open cups while trying to drink and read at the same time. Needed something she could operate with one hand and that wouldn't soak a library book if it tipped.

The seatbelt cut across her neck and made it impossible to look down at a book without the strap digging in. A small adjuster fixed a problem I didn't even realize was stopping her from reading.

Not every book works in a moving car. Short chapters, cliffhanger endings, and big enough text to read in dim light made certain series way better than others for road trips.
