Cosy British Autumn

Purple Star emoji 9 items
Autumn here is less a season than a negotiation. The heating stays off, so everything else has to work harder. A throw that plugs in, a mug with a pumpkin on it, real silk for sleeping. Some of it sensible, most of it just nice.

One of the few properly English drinks, and nobody has ever given it a decent glass. Hand-blown, stemmed and labelled, so there is no argument about what you are holding.

Each pumpkin sits slightly proud of the glaze and none of them quite matches the next. A mug for the six weeks of the year when that is exactly the point.

Electric throws are usually grey and faintly medical. This one has deer and owls on it, which is the only reason I looked twice. Three settings, machine washable, and a good deal cheaper than heating a whole house for one person who is cold.

Not a sensible thing to buy yourself, which is precisely why it is such a good thing to be given. Real silk, and the print comes out of Liberty's own archive by way of Bridgerton, which explains the roses and the ribbons.

Eighty autumn recipes and nothing fancy about any of them. Pies, one-pot suppers, the puddings that only make sense once it goes dark at five. There are four of these books, one for each season.

Rattan pumpkins are the sensible version of a seasonal decoration. Out in September, away in November, and still there the following year.

Fleece rather than wool, so it is the one you reach for instead of the good one you are careful with. Big enough to cover a whole person too, and the squirrels are on the right side of twee.

For the evenings when it goes dark at five and everyone ends up round the table picking at things. Bread, cheese, roast potatoes, more than anyone planned. Pumpkins rather than ghosts, so it stays out long after Halloween.

These live by the back door from about October onwards. On and off in a second, which is what you want when you're nipping to the shed or putting the bins out in the rain. RHS special edition, hence the flowers.
